Ok, we know we can’t spell…
Okay, so Jack and Domenic didn’t always spell Mercatto with two “T’s”
But a double T ‘mercatto’ sign accidentally got made for the original Toronto St location
As young and bold restaurateurs, and, too broke to get the sign remade - they started to take creative license with the mother tongue.
Mercatto in Italian is supposed to be spelled with only one “T’, but the boys would say to the nitpickers that it was “for branding and aesthetic purposes.”
They didn’t know it then, but in a way it was true. It’s been years since then and Jack and Domenic have no desire to drop the extra “T” from Mercatto.
And, if you ask them today why Mercatto is spelled the way it is, you can be sure they’ll give you the same reaction – “it’s a funny story actually…”
