ABOUT MERCATTO

They know it’s spelled wrong, but it’s intentional! Okay, so Jack and Domenic didn’t always spell Mercatto with two “T’s” but when they got the sign back to put over top of Toronto St – they did. Having been young restauranteurs at the time, and financially unable to get the sign remade, when people pointed out that Mercatto in Italian is supposed to be spelled with only one “T,” the boys said it was “for branding and aesthetic purposes.” They didn’t know it then, but in a way it was true. It’s been years since then and Jack and Domenic have no desire to drop the extra “T” from Mercatto. And, if you ask them today why Mercatto is spelled the way it is, you can be sure they’ll give you the same reaction – “it’s a funny story actually…”
